Nera, the photographer, had a rule that she showed family photographs to the couple before sending them to anyone else. At a wedding in a riverside restaurant, the groom's father challenged that rule. He approached while she was changing a battery and asked her to send him one picture for the relatives' group chat. Nera said she first had to ask Dunja and Filip.
"Just tidy up the edge a little," he added, pointing to Dunja's brother and his partner on the screen. He did not mean the lighting. He wanted the partner to disappear and the brother moved closer to an aunt. Nera lowered the camera and explained that she did not make such changes without the consent of the people pictured. The father laughed as though she had refused to move a chair rather than a person.
Dunja overheard the conversation while looking for a lost earring. She told Nera to leave the picture as it was. The father took her two steps aside and explained that some older guests should not have certain things forced on them. Dunja looked toward her brother, who was sharing cake with their grandmother at a table. Nobody there appeared threatened.
At first Filip suggested taking another photograph, just the immediate family. Dunja asked whether that meant without his father or without her brother. He was tired, his tie was tight, and he wanted the day to end without an argument. Only after saying "let's not make a scene" did he notice his wife remove her hand from his shoulder.
Nera withdrew toward the window. She did not want her camera to turn someone else's conflict into a spectacle. Dunja switched off the microphone the host offered for her toast. Instead of speaking, she asked Filip to come outside. Through the glass Nera saw them talking without grand gestures. They returned after ten minutes. Filip went directly to his father.
He told him he could remain at the wedding only if he stopped rearranging their family for his own comfort. His father refused to apologize and left before the music. His departure prompted whispers and later an angry exchange of messages. Dunja did not answer everyone. She told her brother what had happened because she did not want him to learn the truth the next morning from a well-meaning relative.
They collected the album a month later. The cover did not show the large family group but Dunja and Filip in the courtyard, photographed only after they had signaled for Nera to approach. They were not smiling. Filip held her earring in his open palm. The family photograph remained inside, with everyone in their places and an empty margin nobody needed to fill with explanations.
