Jelena went to fetch the lamp from the shared tent, but her husband, Luka, said Marina had it. He didn't ask or check. He simply knew. Ten minutes earlier, Marina had handed Luka his spare shirt without looking, pulling it from the bottom of a bag. Both behaved as though that closeness were ordinary, while it was becoming visible to Jelena only now, beside the lake they had visited with friends.
The camping trip lasted three days. Jelena had worked weekends in recent months, so Luka attended earlier outings with the group without her. She didn't believe sharing a life required sharing every step. Now she was unsettled by feeling like a guest in familiar company, someone nobody wanted to explain an old joke to. When Marina mentioned the food Luka liked in the morning, he looked at her quickly enough for Jelena to stop stirring her tea.
She asked him to walk to an empty stretch of shore. She stated what she had noticed and asked whether there was a relationship she didn't know about. Luka first claimed she was jealous without reason. Jelena sat on a fallen tree and said she wouldn't continue if his only answer was an assessment of her character. Water struck the stones while she waited. Finally, he admitted that he and Marina had begun seeing each other at the start of summer.
She didn't shout across the campsite. She said she wanted to leave and called a friend who had a car. Luka asked them to stay until morning so they wouldn't spoil everyone's trip. Jelena asked why he had become concerned about that only now. As she packed, Marina came to help. Jelena said she wanted neither help nor an explanation that evening. Marina withdrew, and the others left enough space for her to close her bag without an audience.
At home, she didn't try to restore the marriage by competing with camping trips. Luka temporarily moved in with his brother, and they discussed whether to continue together. He quickly requested a plan for forgiveness, as though diligence would be enough. Jelena didn't know the answer. After two months, she decided to end the relationship. She told friends only what she wanted them to know, without any obligation to prove every detail.
The next summer, she went to the lake with her sisters. She didn't choose somewhere else to preserve a memory she no longer wanted. She put up the tent herself, mistakenly facing its entrance into the wind, and moved it while laughing. That evening, the lamp disappeared beneath a blanket. Nobody knew where it was. They searched together and eventually ate by phone light, without feeling that somebody's ignorance concealed something.
