The message arrived while Mladen queued in a shop: "I can still feel how you looked at me this morning." He had not received such a sentence from Mira for years. First he smiled, thinking she was trying to revive something both had neglected. Then he realized they had not seen each other that morning. She left before he woke. A second message came immediately: wrong conversation, a joke between colleagues. The cashier had to ask twice whether he wanted a receipt.
At home he prepared no trap. He put the groceries on the table and asked whom the message was intended for. Mira first spoke about overinterpretation, then about a close friendship. The man was a colleague she had messaged at night for months. She claimed nothing physical had happened. Mladen did not know whether that was true, but did not want to reduce the conversation to one boundary whose remaining uncrossed was supposed to erase everything else.
"You told me you were too tired to talk," he said. "I didn't know you had whole evenings somewhere else." Mira sat down, for once without a phone in her hand. With the colleague she shared fears, plans, and anger at the marriage, leaving Mladen only information about shopping and responsibilities. Their relationship had indeed become impoverished. But she had secretly taken that absence to another man, allowing him to grow close while her husband did not even know something was being built.
Mladen stayed with a friend for several days. He did not request every message to spend hours comparing each word with what she had told him. He requested time and a clear answer about whether Mira wanted to remain married at all. She stopped private messaging with the colleague and proposed conversations with professional help. Mladen did not promise that would be enough. He agreed to the first meeting, then they decided about each subsequent one, sometimes tired before it even began.
Months later they sat on the balcony after a particularly difficult evening. Mira said she missed ease. Mladen replied that he missed it too but did not want to buy it through silence. They did not embrace like people in a film. They cleared away the glasses together and went to bed. The next day she messaged asking whether he could come home earlier because she wanted to talk. He read it twice before answering. He knew whom it was intended for. They had not yet resolved the rest.
