She received the bracelet for her fortieth birthday, in front of twelve friends and a cake already losing its shape. Adnan opened the box slowly, enjoying the attention. Emina rarely wore jewellery, but the bracelet was simple and beautiful. Everyone said how well he knew her. Later, alone together, he asked whether she had noticed Jasmina's envy. Emina laughed because she did not know what else to say.
The relationship ended in January, more quietly than she had expected. They divided their books and arranged to return the keys. Adnan did not mention the bracelet. Emina put it in a drawer beside the tickets from the concert where they had first kissed. She did not want to throw things away while still angry, or turn every memory into evidence against the man with whom she had spent four years. She thought they deserved at least that kind of parting.
In March Adnan's sister called. She asked when she could collect their mother's bracelet. Emina said she did not understand. His sister explained that Adnan had borrowed it for a photo shoot, supposedly as a prop for a business associate to wear. Their mother now needed the jewellery for a family celebration. The silence at the other end matched the silence in Emina's kitchen. Both women realised they were discussing different versions of the same box.
Adnan was angry that his sister had called without him. He told Emina he had intended to buy a similar bracelet and replace it before anyone noticed. Money had been inconvenient at the time, and afterwards he had forgotten. She asked why he had not simply bought her a book. He said she did not understand the pressure of milestone birthdays. The sentence contained nothing about her taste, only his fear of looking less successful in front of their friends.
She took the bracelet to his mother herself. The woman opened the door looking prepared for an unpleasant conversation, but Emina had not come for a verdict. She explained how she had received the jewellery and handed over the box. His mother said she was sorry. Emina believed that short sentence more than all of Adnan's explanations. They drank coffee, talked about the weather and allowed the visit to end without joining forces to mock the man they both knew.
That evening Emina removed the concert tickets from the drawer. She did not throw them away. The kiss had happened even if the birthday gift had been false. She sent Adnan only confirmation that the bracelet had been returned. His message saying she had overreacted went unanswered. When friends later asked about the jewellery, she told the truth without softening it. She no longer wanted to carry the weight of his generosity, even as a story that made everyone more comfortable.
