The best man began with a story about Leon burning three pots while cooking macaroni as a student. Guests laughed, and his bride Ivona brushed crumbs from her wedding dress sleeve. Everything was awkward enough to feel intimate. Then the best man raised his paper and said that before the lovely ending he had to mention something Leon's family probably did not know.
Ivona's breathing changed. She recognized the opening to a story about an old relationship she had told him during a journey, believing the conversation would remain among friends. There was nothing for which she needed forgiveness. She had been an adult, single, and hurt by somebody else's behavior. But the story included a moment when she cried in public, and the best man had considered it amusing for years.
Leon saw her lower her eyes. At first he thought they should endure another minute, avoid spoiling the wedding or humiliating a friend who had helped so much. Then he heard his own name in the sentence: "Lucky our Leon came after all those..." He stood and took a second microphone from the host's table.
"We won't be hearing that story," he said.
The best man laughed and replied that he was only joking. Leon repeated himself without smiling. Music briefly began too early, then stopped. Ivona felt shame that did not belong to her, though her body carried it anyway. She asked her sister to step outside. She did not want the whole evening turned into public proof of Leon's goodness.
Later the best man demanded that Leon apologize before their friends. He said he had been treated like an enemy. Leon told him friendship did not grant permission for everything and he could have finished with hundreds of other memories. They did not reconcile that night. The best man left early, and several relatives claimed young people no longer knew how to take a joke.
The next day Ivona told Leon his response had helped, but she needed time to stop replaying the scene. He did not say everything was fine now. They canceled the planned group breakfast and spent the morning alone, eating leftover pie in their hotel room. Later the best man sent an apology without excuses. Ivona read it and did not answer immediately. Leon did not carry messages between them. Their first marital agreement was that gratitude, forgiveness, and a public smile did not have to arrive on the same day.
