Marina learned their neighbor had won an award for the loveliest balcony only when people with a camera arrived outside the building. He lived on the top floor with a small exit onto the shared terrace. In the photograph of his green corner she recognized her lemon tree, another neighbor's lavender, and two pots they had jointly bought for the residents' garden. Everything had been moved beside his window. The rest of the roof remained outside the frame, along with the bench where everyone usually sat.

The neighbor, Boris, said the prize benefited the building because they would receive new watering equipment. Marina asked why the entry carried only his name and described years of personal work. He replied that someone had to represent the community. While they argued, his husband brought chairs out for filming. He looked surprised when Marina said the plants were not Boris's. Apparently even at home the story contained a different number of participants from the actual terrace.

Marina touched none of the pots. She asked the camera operator to walk to the other side of the roof before the interview. She showed the shared space, the empty spots where plants had stood until recently, and neighbors who came to water them. She did not claim Boris had never helped. He had, particularly carrying soil. But help did not mean he could turn everyone else into the backdrop to his success. An older neighbor approached her lavender and simply called it the name she had given it for years.

The crew did not film the planned story. Organizers temporarily paused the award and spoke with residents. Boris was furious that they had spoiled a rare chance for the building to receive something free. His husband asked why communal benefit required concealing communal work. He did not immediately answer. Later he withdrew the entry. The equipment went to another winner, and plants returned to locations where the sunlight suited them rather than a photograph meant to glorify somebody.

For several days the terrace was quieter. Then Boris arrived with a bag of soil and asked whether help was needed. Marina delivered no grand speech about forgiveness. She pointed to two heavy pots needing repotting. He worked beside the others without a camera or promised prize. His husband brought lemonade and left the pitcher on the shared bench. When the sun set, nobody remained outside the picture, including the neighbor who had first tried taking its best part for himself alone.
