At her first adult swimming lesson, Alisa said she had come because of back pain. That was only partly true. She was forty one and spent every summer on the shore, watching other people's bags while everyone else swam. The man beside her admitted he was afraid of water. His honesty made her explanation unnecessarily complicated. His name was Nedim, and he held his rubber cap like an object discovered on another planet.

The instructor positioned them beside the edge. Alisa put her face under, while Nedim covered both his nose and mouth with his hands at every attempt. After class they met beside the tea machine. She proposed an agreement: neither would miss a lesson without telling the other. Nedim accepted but added that the message must not contain an invented fever. Both laughed too loudly for the empty corridor.

Over the following weeks they progressed unevenly. Nedim mastered floating while Alisa still held the rope. She submerged her head easily, while his eyes remained tightly closed. They did not give each other instructions over the teacher's. After class they shared a roll from the bakery that was still open. They discussed small things: stiff towels, boring meetings, his son who had recently moved out, and her unsuccessful attempts to grow basil on the kitchen windowsill.

One evening Alisa did not come. She messaged that she was outside the entrance but could not go in that day. Nedim replied that he would wait for her after class if she wanted. He did not rush outside to persuade her. An hour later he found her on a bench. Her former husband had called about selling their shared vacation house. Throughout the conversation she had felt once again like someone agreeing to other people's plans. Nedim sat with wet hair and listened without suggesting a property price.

At the final lesson they swam the required width of the pool, each at their own pace. Nedim arrived first, turned toward Alisa, and stayed far enough away not to interfere. When she touched the tiles, he did not raise his arms like a coach. He simply smiled. Afterward they arranged a Saturday trip to a lake, with an explicit right to remain on shore all day. Alisa brought two bags and did not have to guard either of them. As they walked beside the water, Nedim took her hand, warm and completely dry.
