The poster declared "Free Mosaic Workshop" in large letters. Jelena agreed to teach because the cultural center wanted to attract people who didn't usually attend. The organizer, Denis, said materials were covered. Twenty adult participants had chosen colors and begun arranging pieces when his assistant brought her a payment list. Every started frame required an amount nobody had mentioned beforehand.

Jelena asked whether it was a voluntary contribution. The assistant said no, because materials were expensive. She looked around. One woman brought her sister as a birthday gift, a young couple shared a box, and a pensioner carefully copied a flower from his handkerchief. Nobody had come seeking a service without value. They came to an event whose organizer had already stated its price as zero.

Denis claimed only teaching was free, which everyone should understand. Jelena showed him the poster, but was angrier that he wanted her to collect payment. Hers was the face people had just begun trusting. She said she wouldn't continue until he clearly explained what happened and offered everyone the chance to leave without cost, including those already using materials.

He explained with many words about misunderstanding. People reacted differently. Some could pay but didn't want to. Others blushed because they hadn't brought money. Jelena said nobody needed to explain personal finances before the room. The center director, summoned from his office, covered materials from the event budget and addressed Denis separately. The workshop continued, but the feeling of welcome didn't immediately return.

Near the end, the pensioner asked whether he could take his frame home without a later bill. Jelena felt shame she hadn't caused. She clearly said yes and gave everyone brief confirmation that no payment was due. Afterwards, Denis accused her of overdoing paperwork and questions. She replied that people whose terms had already changed couldn't regain trust through another vague promise.

She organized the next workshop directly with the center. Its invitation stated what was included, its duration, and that there were no later costs. The pensioner returned with a neighbor. He brought a photograph of the mosaic hanging above his kitchen table. Jelena didn't ask him to advertise the event with his smile. She asked which colors he wanted today. He chose red and began without glancing toward the door, like someone who knew what he had agreed to this time.
