On the journey, Una listened to a show about a mysterious disappearance. When she reached the hotel run by her partner's family, its old façade seemed like the beginning of a new episode. The hotel had a closed eastern wing, uncaptioned photographs, and a receptionist who said the owner disliked questions about the past. Una felt the pleasant excitement of imagining something large hidden beneath a tidy surface.
Her partner's name was Marin. They had been together for five months, long enough to know his laugh, not long enough to know the family details. All she knew about his mother was that she did not live there. When she asked where she was, Marin said she had left long ago. Just then, his work phone rang, leaving the conversation open at the worst possible point.
The next day, Una entered the eastern wing after finding the door ajar. On a shelf were old shirts, a box of women's shoes, and an envelope marked "Do not open in front of guests." She photographed it and sent it to a friend, suggesting the hotel might conceal a terrible story. Her friend replied only: "Have you asked anyone?"
Marin found her in the hallway. The envelope contained invoices for a failed renovation. The shoes belonged to his sister, who had left them before moving. His mother lived in another city with her female partner and was due to visit for lunch the next weekend. Una wished she could disappear into a cupboard among the towels. She showed him the message and apologized for turning someone else's life into a plot before having an ordinary conversation.
The real unpleasantness came that evening. Marin's father learned that Una did not own a company but worked freelance. His tone changed. He asked how she imagined a future with his son and explained that the hotel could not support another person. Una replied that no one had asked it to. Marin stopped his father and said her income was not a family project to be assessed.
They spent the rest of the weekend in a small apartment near the station. Una sent her friend a correction and asked her to delete the photograph of the private envelope. Marin promised to leave less of his relationships for silence to explain. The following week, they went to dinner with his mother together. She was a cheerful woman who immediately asked whether they liked spicy food. Una answered, then listened to what the woman actually said. All evening, she needed no secrets to find the company interesting.
