Jelena wanted a simple dinner at home for Saša's birthday. He said he would invite his friends and she hers. A week before the celebration he told her his could not attend. First one, then another, then almost everyone. Saša shrugged and said age showed who was truly close. Jelena hugged him, angry with people who, she believed, had abandoned him without explanation.

The dinner happened anyway, small and pleasant. Saša seemed content but occasionally mentioned those absent. Jelena began responding coldly to his oldest friend. When that friend met them in town and asked why they no longer invited him, she said he apparently considered invitations unimportant. His bewilderment was so immediate that she stopped before continuing the accusation. He knew nothing about the birthday.

Saša first claimed the message might have remained unsent. Jelena asked about the others. There were no other messages. He had invited nobody. He admitted fearing friends would come only from obligation, the evening would be exhausting, and everyone would notice how insecure he had felt lately. He did not want to say the celebration did not suit him. Turning others into people who did not value him was easier.

Jelena could understand fear but would not accept the account as harmless. Because of him she had hurt a man who had refused nothing. Saša said he had not expected her to interfere. She replied that she had listened to her partner describe friends letting him down. She could not simultaneously support him and doubt every sentence in advance. She asked him to tell the truth to those whose names he had used.

The conversations were difficult. One friend grew angry; another said he too sometimes avoided celebrations. Nobody promised Saša never to decline an invitation in future. He had to learn that one no was not a verdict on an entire friendship. Jelena personally apologized to the man she had treated coldly. She did not relay Saša's fear as an excuse he was supposed to protect for him.

The following year Saša organized no birthday celebration. He said he wanted a peaceful day and suggested separate coffees with several friends during the week. Jelena bought a small cake and did not urge him toward more. One friend could not make coffee, so they arranged another time. Saša told her without bitterness. It was enough that a plan had failed that day, without anyone needing to become a bad person because of it.
