For three weeks Ela helped Andrej prepare his daughter's graduation celebration. Lena was nineteen and lived with her mother in another city. Andrej said she needed time to accept his new relationship. So Ela agreed to be introduced as a friend for now. Two years into their relationship that word already felt too small, but she did not want to force an adult child into feelings she did not have.

She ordered the cake, found chairs, and helped arrange the garden. Andrej thanked her at night when they were alone. Before others he merely said Ela knew where things were. On the day Lena approached with an envelope and said her father had forgotten the agreed weekend supplement. Ela looked without understanding. Lena thought she had been coming for years as household help.

There was no ambiguity. Andrej told his daughter Ela cleaned, cooked, and helped because work kept him too busy. He had not simply postponed an introduction. He assigned her an occupation and working hours to explain her shoes in the hallway. Ela returned the envelope and said she did not work for Lena's father. Then she asked him to speak with them before guests arrived.

Lena became angry first. She was not against their relationship; she objected to her father claiming for two years that he still mourned his marriage while sharing daily life with somebody else. Andrej tried saying he had protected both. Ela asked from which truth exactly: having a partner, her being a real person, or his daughter having her own reaction without his script.

The celebration continued because Lena did not want her father taking that day too. Ela stayed only as long as she wished, sat as a guest, and declined to take over the kitchen when glasses ran short. Andrej carried trays. It was not public punishment but the host's work he had until then invisibly left to her.

Afterward Ela went home and requested time without daily calls. Andrej had to explain his decisions to his daughter without Ela mediating. Several weeks later Lena sent a graduation photograph and thanked her for avoiding a scene before guests. Ela wished her a good summer. She did not continue with Andrej. She did not want a third year trying to occupy a place he already knew how to make for her only when nobody else watched.
