Mirna sent her share of the rent as soon as she received her salary. She earned more than Adnan, so they had agreed she would contribute more. She did not consider it a favor requiring acknowledgment. They lived together, and she wanted both to have money for personal needs. Adnan said they would recalculate the arrangement as soon as his situation improved at work.
It improved in March. He received a new contract and a more responsible position, but told Mirna only that his schedule had changed. Initially he intended to wait for one salary payment to be certain. Then he bought the camera he had long wanted. Next he repaid an old debt. By autumn he had become accustomed to the money left over, as though he had created it entirely separately from everything they shared.
Meanwhile Mirna postponed a course she had planned. Everyday expenses had risen, and she did not want to touch her small savings. Adnan listened while she calculated whether she could enroll in spring. He said caution was wise. Later that sentence would shame him most, because it was not an omission. He actively supported her sacrifice to avoid his own.
The truth emerged over dinner with his old friend. Relaxed after a good day, Adnan began describing how much the new contract had changed his life. He mentioned that he now almost matched Mirna's salary. Mirna put her glass on the table. His friend immediately understood that the conversation was not supposed to go this way. He asked whether they needed more bread, although the basket was not empty.
At home Adnan tried explaining that he had planned to tell her. Mirna did not ask when. She asked why, while watching her abandon the course, he considered her larger share of expenses still consistent with their agreement. He said the money had never belonged to anyone else; he had earned it. She answered that she wanted neither his money nor anything unearned, only truthful figures on which to base decisions about her own.
They changed the distribution of expenses, and Adnan reimbursed the difference for the previous months. That was simpler than the rest. Mirna enrolled in the course, but stopped casually sharing every small wish with him. Adnan noticed the silence only when he saw a new book or learned about an outing she had already arranged. He had returned the money to the proper account. He still did not know how to restore the ease with which she once told him what she wanted from the following spring.
