The rice jar changed shelves first. Then the bathroom towels appeared folded in a way Tena never used. Her partner Boris said she had probably moved things and forgotten. Tena was not immediately suspicious. They had recently arranged the apartment and were still deciding where things belonged. Yet when a bowl she had not bought appeared on the table, she could no longer accept that the home was simply adjusting itself to them.
Boris's mother previously had a key, but they agreed to retrieve it once moving was complete. Tena did not want daily visits while they worked. Boris said it was settled. Now she asked whether the key really was with him. He showed her one from a drawer and laughed at her suspicion. He did not mention leaving his mother another copy, convinced a few small visits would not bother Tena if she never learned of them.
Tena found his mother in the apartment when she returned for a forgotten wallet. The woman was washing a window and looked equally surprised. She said Boris had told her Tena appreciated help but did not know how to ask directly. She showed her bag of cleaning products and immediately explained that she did not want to intrude. Tena sat down. For the first time she saw no opponent, but another person Boris had given a convenient, inaccurate role.
When he arrived, both were waiting. He tried embracing his mother, then Tena, as though physical closeness could distribute blame. His mother asked why he said the help had been requested. Tena asked why he claimed to hold the only spare key. He said he wanted them to get along. Neither responded to that intention. They wanted answers about his actual actions, without discussing which woman was more demanding.
His mother left the key on the table and took her cleaning products. She did not invite Tena for coffee to turn their new alliance instantly into intimacy. She simply said she would ask her directly about visits in future. Boris was dejected for several days and expected comfort. Tena let him be dejected. She was not responsible for repairing the consequences of a story that presented her boundary as an inability to request help.
Later they washed the windows together, awkwardly, leaving streaks his mother would notice. Tena did not demand perfection. She wanted decisions about their home not to originate in conversations where she was absent. Next time Boris invited his mother to lunch only after agreeing it with her. His mother arrived without a bag and sat at the table. The rice stayed on the wrong shelf another month because nobody urgently needed to correct it anymore.
