In the photograph, Mina stood very close to a man outside a hotel. His arm encircled her waist, her head turned toward him. A mutual friend, Tarik, sent Boris the picture with no explanation beyond: "I thought you should know." Boris felt his stomach tighten. Mina was attending a work seminar at that hotel. She had told him she would stay for coffee with participants afterwards.

He called her but didn't begin with an accusation. He explained what he had received and said he wanted to understand the scene. Mina was silent for several seconds, then sighed angrily. The man was a colleague who steadied her when her heel caught between paving stones. Three other people stood beside them. She didn't demand belief without discussion. She said she would come home and explain everything, but wouldn't prove fidelity by abandoning every colleague.

Boris asked Tarik where the rest of the group had been. Tarik replied that he didn't know because Boris's former partner, Ena, had sent the photograph. He had omitted that earlier. Ena also attended the seminar, although she claimed to have passed by accidentally. When Boris called, she said she merely wanted to protect him. He requested the full picture. She admitted cropping out the others because they would distract attention.

At home, Mina was more hurt by Tarik's role than Boris's question. He frequently sat at their table, yet had forwarded an accusation without checking or naming the person who prepared it. Boris met him. Tarik admitted Ena had requested help because she hoped Boris would return. She said he only needed to show what could be seen. Only now did he understand how much had deliberately been left unseen.

They put distance into the friendship. Boris clearly told Ena he wanted no further contact. Mina didn't request access to his phone, nor did he ask her to stop attending seminars. They discussed how quickly one picture could have made them opponents. It was uncomfortable to admit that trust didn't remove the first stab of doubt, but could change what a person did afterwards.

A few weeks later, they went walking with friends. Mina caught a root, and Boris steadied her elbow. Someone raised a phone for a group photograph. Mina asked them to wait until everyone was ready. They came out awkwardly, with someone's eyes closed and an arm entering from the edge. They posted the entire picture because that day the rest of the scene was precisely their favorite part.
