Luka came home with flowers and money for a new refrigerator. He said he had won on sports betting, almost casually, as though finding a banknote in the street. His wife Jelena felt happy before thinking. For months the old refrigerator had hummed loudly enough to be heard from the bedroom at night. Luka opened a drink they saved for guests and began describing models he had already examined, each with more room than they actually needed.
Then his friend called to congratulate him and ask whether he had finally recovered at least part of what he had lost. The phone was on speaker. Luka muted it, but Jelena had already put down her glass. She asked how much part meant. He said the friend exaggerated. She repeated the question, this time without trying to preserve the good mood. Slowly he admitted betting for months and that the winnings covered less than half what he had spent from money reserved for other obligations.
Jelena thought of all the small expenses they had argued over. He calculated what she spent on haircuts while calling his own stakes little things he would recover when the right moment came. "I brought you money, not debt," he said. She replied that he had brought only the end of a story, expecting it to keep her from asking about the beginning. The new refrigerator suddenly looked like an object meant to close the door on questions that spoiled his celebration.
They bought nothing that evening. They reviewed their joint finances and agreed to protect money for essentials. Luka also had to admit borrowing from his friend, small in his words but large enough to change the next two months. Jelena did not take on the role of someone inspecting his phone daily. She said he needed to seek professional support for the behavior he had hidden and take concrete steps toward rebuilding trust, while she would decide whether she could remain in that process.
They replaced the refrigerator much later with a modest model paid for from genuinely available money. By then Luka had spent several months speaking with a counselor and regularly showing his obligations without waiting to be asked. Jelena did not call every orderly month a victory. She wanted an ordinary life that did not depend on unexpected winnings. When they switched on the new appliance, the kitchen became quieter. They sat without a celebratory drink, and Luka asked how much to reserve for the next bill. This time he waited for the answer before promising anything.
