Goran had worn a mustache for twenty-seven years. In their wedding photographs it was dark; at the latest family lunch it was almost white. He had never shaved it off. His wife Vera once said that without it, she would have to get to know him again. He remembered that more seriously than she intended.
He was given a role in an amateur play that called for a very different face. The director suggested makeup. Goran went to the barber. He did not tell Vera, wanting to surprise her at the premiere. She arrived straight from work that day, exhausted and convinced she would sleep through the second act.
In the foyer, a clean-shaven man in a dark suit approached her and offered a glass of water. For the first two seconds, she did not recognize him. Then she laughed so loudly that people turned around. Goran bowed. Vera caught him by the lapels and kissed him just as the cultural center's photographer raised his camera.
The photograph appeared with a report on the premiere. A neighbor sent it to a group chat with a single question mark. By noon, Vera had received four discreet calls. An acquaintance offered support "whatever is happening." Goran looked at the photograph on his phone and laughed until tears ran down his face.
At first, Vera did not find it funny. She was angry that people found an affair easier to believe than tenderness between a married couple. Then she noticed that she had not expected that kiss herself. For years, their parting kisses had been brief and precise, as though confirming that the household timetable still worked.
At the evening performance, the photographer asked for a new picture explaining the confusion. Vera refused to pose as though cleared of an accusation. Goran agreed to an ordinary cast photograph, published with names. The rumor died by itself, accompanied by several people claiming they had known all along.
At home, she asked whether he would grow his mustache back. He asked whether she would then stop noticing him again. He did not sound accusatory. They sat on the edge of the bed and talked about becoming capable partners in a life they rarely experienced together anymore. Vera admitted missing their old playfulness.
The following Saturday, they met in the foyer of another theater, each arriving separately. Goran waited with two tickets. His mustache had already begun to grow. Vera recognized him at once but offered her hand as though he were a stranger. "I've heard you're an interesting man," she said. This time, nobody took their photograph.
