Ruža had worked at the design studio for four years before anyone invited her out after work on Friday. The invitation came from her colleague Ema, who knew every waiter and never ran out of conversation. She said Ruža only needed a little courage. She chose a dress for her, showed her how to start a conversation, and forbade her from answering a compliment by explaining how long she had spent sewing.
On the first evening, Ruža listened. On the second, she described drawing a client's logo on a pizza box because his computer had broken. Andrej, an architect, laughed longer than the others. He asked to see her sketches. Ema remarked that Ruža had become much more interesting since emerging from her cave.
Ruža took the comment as a joke. She did not notice that Ema no longer sat beside her or suggested going home together. When Andrej invited her to an exhibition, Ema said it was time for a bold change. She arranged a free haircut filmed by a local salon. Ruža agreed to have it shortened, confident her friend would help explain what she wanted.
In front of the camera, Ema requested an extremely short cut. Ruža tried to say that was not what they had discussed. Laughing, Ema reminded her that brave women did not abandon a challenge halfway through. The hairdresser paused and asked Ruža directly whether she wanted to continue. She looked at the lock of hair already cut in her lap. She said she wanted only to tidy what had been started, with no further shortening and no filming.
Ema was angry about the ruined content. In the changing room, Ruža heard her say that at least Andrej might see what his new favorite looked like without long hair. The sentence hurt, but clarified the past few weeks. Ruža requested that the recording be deleted, paid for the hairdresser's work, and went home alone.
She came to the exhibition with shorter hair and a dress chosen without advice. Andrej said it suited her, and then they talked about the paintings. Ruža was almost disappointed by how little the world had changed because of something she had feared so much. She accepted Ema's apology as the beginning of a possible repair, not an obligation to restore their closeness immediately. Later, when a new colleague asked what she should wear on Friday, Ruža showed her two options. Then she handed back the phone and asked what she felt comfortable in. She did not try to improve the answer.
